SAANICH – In just 11 days drivers in BC will have to change their habits, put down their cell phones and keep their hands on the wheel. Starting January 1st texting at the wheel will be illegal and drivers will only be allowed to use hands-free cell phones. Exempt are emergency services personnel and drivers who need to call 911. In Vancouver today Solicitor General Kash Heed unveiled the road signs that will remind people of the new law. Beginning February 1st, drivers caught using a cell without a handsfree device can expect at 167-dollar ticket. People caught texting or emailing at the wheel will recieve an additional 3 penalty points on their drivers license. There is zero tolerance for drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program. The new legislation has boosted sales at stores which sell cell phone accessories. Business has quadrupled at WirelessWave at Mayfair Shopping Centre as people rush out to buy hands-free devices as holiday gifts in time for the changing law.
